Greg Geffner - Twisted, Squished Cubes, Ceramic Sculpture
| ||
Twisted, Squished Cubes, Ceramic Sculptures are made using the transformation and malleability of clay, starting with a static cube that is manipulated into various shapes. Simple plaster, slip molds of cubes, are filled with liquid clay and then the contents, the cube positive, is removed still in very wet condition, vulnerable to the external forces of manipulation and articulation. The static cube, fresh out of the mold, is twisted, squished, and stretched to articulate it into dynamic compositions, leaving a historical record in it’s new shapes, of the forces that had acted upon it. The new forms are a myriad of dynamic sculptural remnants. The work is influenced by the ongoing turbulence of events, the world has endured, especially in the last four years of the tumultuous times from the effects of the twists and manipulations of Covid, the rise of fascism, Trump, Putin, Ukraine, and global warming affecting civilization’s transformation into the state it is today. The forces of fate, having had skewed the momentum of things into their various tangent directions. The kernel of the basic cube, is a metaphor for the essence of the foundations of both civilization and of the self, that are acted upon by outside influences, that renders out resulting new entities and situations. The fluidity of these transformations is also influenced by the pristine natural flow of change that happens in nature, where cause and effect is less influenced by human kind. Akin to the principles of fluid dynamics that occur in liquids coming together in natural states. | ||
